About Nasreen
I am a clinical psychologist, based in Sydney, Australia. My passion for psychology developed when I started my Bachelor of Arts (Hons, Psychology) degree in Calcutta University, India.
My curiosity in human emotions and behaviour led me to continue my further studies in Calcutta University, where I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Psychology, and a Master of Arts in Applied Psychology, with special focus on clinical psychology. Over two decades ago, I arrived in Australia as an international student to pursue my PhD in Psychology from Macquarie University (Sydney), where I focused on the effects of child sexual abuse (CSA) on adult romantic relationships. As part of my training to become a registered clinical psychologist in Australia, I completed a Master of Clinical Psychology from the Australian College of Applied Psychology (Sydney). Further, my keen interest in human relationships and connection, led me to complete a Graduate Diploma in Counselling, focusing on couple and family therapy from Jansen Newman Institute, Sydney.
I have more than 20 years of work experience in the field of psychology, both in the academia as a lecturer at Macquarie University and in the clinical practice setting. I have conducted and supervised numerous research projects, where my research and clinical work mainly focus on the intricacies of human relationships, adverse childhood experiences that affect them, and specific mental health issues faced by the LGBTIQ+ community of Australia. I have presented my research findings in national and international conferences and received multiple academic awards, as well as awards for my community contributions.
In recognition of my dedication and commitment as a teacher, I was awarded the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. I am enthusiastic about professional growth and regularly participate in workshops and peer supervision sessions to finetune my academic and professional skills.
I am a strong advocate of social justice and I actively participated in the Marriage Equality Campaign in 2017 and continue to volunteer with Twenty10 Inc. Gay & Lesbian Counselling Services of NSW. I am a Person of Colour (PoC) and it is my Queer-Immigrant minority group identity that informs my professional work. I live with my long-term same-sex partner of 27 years and both of us enjoy spending time together and with our friends and family members.
When not working, I enjoy gardening, bush-walking, camping, taking photographs to create memories, listening to audio books, and actively organising social meet ups with my friends. Every day, I live with a sense of gratitude and believe in treating myself and others with respect, kindness, and compassion.
Accompanying my multiple academic qualifications, I am accredited as a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), Fellow of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, and a member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN). I am also fully registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).
