ABOUT NASREEN

I am a Clinical Psychologist, based in Sydney. I have 20+ years of experience in the field of psychology, both in the academia as a lecturer and in the clinical practice setting.

I received multiple awards for my academic achievements and community contributions. My research and clinical work mainly focus on the intricacies of human relationships, adverse childhood experiences that affect them, and specific mental health issues faced by the LGBTIQ+ community of Australia. I am an experienced Schema Therapist and through the lens of reflective practice, I help adult individual clients recognise and break their long-term unhelpful behavioural patterns. With my couple clients, I use Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) to help them learn the skills to express vulnerable emotions to each other and improve communication patterns. As a member of the queer community and a Person of Colour (PoC), I integrate a wholistic approach in my therapeutic work. I believe in treating myself and others with respect, kindness, and compassion.

How Can I Help You?

I work with all ages of adults dealing with a broad spectrum of life challenges, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, interpersonal and relationship issues, and other significant life stressors.

In individual therapy, I aim to create a therapeutic alliance based on mutual respect, trust, and sense of safety in a non-judgmental environment. Taking a collaborative approach, I nurture a sense of empowerment in my clients to identify their therapy goals that help them to live a richer, fuller, and a more meaningful life. Each of my clients is a unique individual. Therefore, using an intersectional lens, I take particular interest in knowing them, their life and cultural histories, their values, dreams, and issues that hinder their sense of personal growth. Such deep understanding of their needs and struggles helps me create an individually-focused, trauma-informed, evidence-based therapeutic approach, while complementing their inner strength and authenticity.

In couple therapy, I help couples to understand their individual needs in relationships and their struggles in communicating such needs to each other. Taking a systemic and intersectional approach, in my therapy I explore the intricacies of expectations, roles, cultural values, and emotional injuries in the couple’s relationship. In a safe and respectful therapeutic setting, I help couples communicate their vulnerable emotions to each other, so that they can support each other in creating a shared sense of meaningful partnership.

I am a LGBTIQ+ affirming therapist with long-term expertise in working with the LGBTIQ+ community in Australia. I personally know the struggles that we face growing up in a cis-heteronormative society, leaving one feeling anxious, marginalized, discriminated, and confused. Research across the world has highlighted the greater risk of developing depression, social anxiety, and other mental health issues among the members of the LGBTIQ+ community due to the structural and systemic discrimination, prejudice, and abuse.  Further, through my academic research, I found that higher levels of heterosexist harassment and discrimination faced by the LGBTIQ+ community in Australia led to poorer mental health conditions and sense of coping in facing various life stressors. My work is diversity-positive and using an intersectional lens, I support my clients navigate through such unique challenges in a respectful, safe, and non-judgmental therapeutic environment.

I have extensive experience in working with clients from the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) community. Migrating to a country often brings special challenges to the individuals where they may experience a sense of loss of identity, grief, displacement, anxiety, and intergenerational conflict. As a Person of Colour (PoC) and an immigrant therapist, my culturally informed practice helps my clients work through such issues and cultivate a sense of resilience and growth, both in individual and couple therapy.

COVID-19: Mode of Presentation

At Gentle Mind Clinical Psychology, I offer both, face-to-face and telehealth therapy (via Zoom & telephone).

During this uncertain time of COVID-19, for my onsite face-to-face sessions I strictly follow the COVID safe plan and guidelines prepared by Australian Psychological Society (APS). Such guidelines help me focus on safety, prevention, and response to the current pandemic.

Clients, interested in availing face-to-face sessions, will be required to follow such guidelines and sign the “APS Informed Consent Form for Return to Face-to-Face Sessions During the COVID-19 Pandemic”. Please find a copy of the form here.

Please note that I may temporarily withhold face-to-face services, if deemed unsafe to proceed with such an arrangement, based on severity and risk of spreading COVID-19. In order to avoid any disruption in my clients’ therapy, I will be most happy to continue with our valuable therapeutic progress via telehealth.
